International Women's Day is observed annually on March 8. Originating as National Women's Day in the United States in February 1909, its global inception occurred at the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Denmark, where Clara Zetkin, a prominent women's rights activist, advocated for an international day dedicated to amplifying women's voices in their pursuit of equal rights.

The proposal garnered unanimous support from female delegates representing 17 countries, including Finland's pioneering three women Members of Parliament. The inaugural International Women's Day took place in March 1911, with the definitive date of March 8 established in 1913. Recognizing its significance, the United Nations formally embraced the celebration in 1975 and, in 1996, introduced the inaugural annual theme: "Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future."

In celebration of this year's IWD students from Landmark College, Ikorodu, articulate the diverse and pivotal roles women play in society.

LAWAL FARIDAH

"Women in the modern world have transcended traditional boundaries, excelling as working professionals, efficient homemakers, and proud mothers and daughters. Beyond conventional roles, women actively contribute to the global workforce, with a median female share of 45.4%. Notable figures like Lola Ade-John and Imaan Sulaman Ibrahim exemplify women's impact in government, while Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria's first lady, boasts a 12-year tenure as a senator."

AJIROBA DAMILOLA SS3C

"Throughout history, women have been the cornerstone of family life, assuming roles as wives, partners, organizers, directors, creators, distributors, managers, caregivers, and disciplinarians. Globally, women comprise 43% of the agricultural labour force, rising to 70% in some nations. Their role extends beyond the household, contributing significantly to community development and supporting the health and development of children."

OGUNSAKIN HALIMAT SS2C

"Women, often referred to as the "mother nature" of society, contribute significantly to various aspects. They manage businesses, influence communities, and serve as natural builders. Their roles include being directors, organizers, mothers, economists, distributors, disciplinarians, caregivers, and community managers. Recognizing women's triple role—reproductive, productive, and community managing—is essential."

ALLI ADEELAH

"Women are the backbone of families and society, performing multifaceted roles as wives, partners, organizers, administrators, directors, disburser, mothers, economists, disciplinarians, teachers, health officers, artists, and societal contributors. Their involvement in community organizations, coupled with their key role in socio-economic development, highlights their indispensable impact."

GRACE IMBU: JS1A

Enumerating the daily responsibilities, Grace emphasizes a woman's integral role in family life—from taking care of the family and preparing meals to nurturing children, contributing to the family's success, managing the home, and supporting the father in providing basic needs.

RODIAT ABDULAZEEZ: JS2D

Acknowledging the evolving role of women, Rodiat highlights their increased responsibility in the family and society. Women are no longer confined to household chores but actively contribute to the workforce, create businesses, and address unemployment.
